How does character progression work?
Overview
Character progression is the system that tracks and deepens the relationship between a user and a character over time. The more you chat with a character, the stronger the bond becomes — unlocking new traits, richer responses, and a more personalized experience.
Relationship Tiers
Every user-character relationship starts at the bottom and progresses through five tiers:

|------|-------------|
| New | First interactions. The character is friendly but has limited context about you. |
| Regular | The character recognizes you and references basic facts from past conversations. |
| Familiar | Conversations feel more natural. The character anticipates your preferences and communication style. |
| Friend | Deep rapport. The character remembers detailed history and adapts its tone to match your dynamic. |
| Close | The strongest bond. Full personality depth, longest memory recall, and the most personalized interactions. |
Earning XP
You earn XP (experience points) toward the next tier simply by chatting. Every message exchange contributes. Longer, more engaged conversations earn more XP than brief exchanges. There is no shortcut or way to buy progression — it is earned through genuine interaction.
Unlockable Traits
As your relationship tier increases, the character unlocks new capabilities:
- Enhanced Memory — the character retains more details and recalls them more reliably
- Deeper Responses — responses become more nuanced and contextually aware
- Personality Depth — the character expresses a wider emotional range and more complex opinions
- Adaptive Tone — the character adjusts its communication style based on your conversation patterns
These traits activate automatically when you reach the required tier. No action is needed on your part.
Affinity Score
Behind the tiers is a numeric affinity score that represents the overall strength of your relationship. You can see this score in the chat sidebar alongside your current tier and progress toward the next one. The affinity score factors in conversation frequency, depth, and recency.

Note Progression is per-user, per-character. Your tier with one character does not affect your tier with another.
