What are character memories?
Overview
Character memories allow your characters to remember facts, preferences, and details about the users they interact with. Instead of starting every conversation from scratch, a character with memories can reference past interactions, recall a user's name, remember their preferences, and build continuity over time.
How Memories Are Created
Memories are automatically extracted from conversations as they happen. After each message, the system identifies noteworthy details and stores them for future use. There are six memory types:
- Fact — concrete information the user shared (e.g., "lives in Austin", "has a dog named Maple")
- Preference — likes, dislikes, and stated preferences (e.g., "prefers sci-fi over fantasy")
- Event — things that happened or are planned (e.g., "started a new job last week")
- Relationship — connections to other people (e.g., "has a sister named Jen")
- Emotion — emotional states or recurring feelings the user has expressed
- Goal — aspirations or objectives the user has mentioned (e.g., "training for a marathon")
Each memory is assigned an importance score that determines how likely it is to surface in future conversations. Relationship and fact memories receive the highest default scores.
Viewing and Managing Memories
You can view all memories a character has stored about you from the Memories page in the chat sidebar. From there you can:
- Pin a memory — pinned memories are always included in the character's context, ensuring they are never forgotten
- Delete a memory — remove any memory you do not want the character to retain
- View importance scores — see how the system ranked each memory's relevance
Persistence
Memories persist across conversations. If you close a chat and return days later, the character still has access to everything it previously learned about you. Memories are per-user — your memories are private and not visible to other users chatting with the same character.
Tip If a character remembers something incorrectly, delete the inaccurate memory from the Memories page. The character will stop referencing it immediately.
Note Memory extraction is automatic and cannot be disabled per-message. If you share something you later want forgotten, use the Memories page to remove it.
