What Are Read Receipts
Read receipts are the blue double-check marks that appear on messages after the recipient has seen them. A single gray check means the message was delivered; double blue checks mean it was read.
Disabling Read Receipts
Go to Settings → Messages → Read Receipts and toggle the setting off. The change takes effect immediately for all conversations.
How It Works Both Ways
Read receipts are a mutual setting. When you disable them:
- Other users will not see blue checks on messages they send you: they will only see the delivered (gray) indicator
- You will not see blue checks on messages you send to others: even if they have read receipts enabled on their end
This is intentional: the setting works in both directions to maintain consistency.
Re-Enabling
Toggle the setting back on at any time from the same location. Re-enabling does not retroactively show read receipts for messages that were read while the setting was off.
